Description:

1860 Lincoln & Hamlin "Union Nominations" Campaign Poster

An 1860 campaign poster for Abraham Lincoln and his running mate, Hannibal Hamlin. Measuring 20.25" x 28" (sight), N.p., ca. 1860. Headlined "UNION NOMINATIONS" with a large eagle and shield at the top, expertly restored. Promoting the election of Abraham Lincoln as President and Hannibal Hamlin as Vice President. Also nominated are Thomas Kingsford for Governor, Thomas Gaylord for Lieutenant Governor, Franklin A. Alberger for General Commissioner, and numerous others. The broadside has been professionally restored and mounted on acid-free linen. Matted and framed to the overall size of 27" x 38". Included is a photograph of the poster before restoration. The restored piece still has flattened folds with creasing and cracking to the paint. Scratches and wear. Holes have been punched at the edges, with some staining around the holes (possibly rust). Overall an attractive piece. A similar, yet smaller example was previously sold in 2008 at Winslow Auction for over $12,000.

Hannibal Hamlin (1809-1891) was an opponent of slavery and fought against the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854. Although he had begun his political career as a Democrat, he ultimately left the Democratic Party for the newly formed Republican Party, and in 1860, he became the Republican nominee for Vice President on a ticket with Presidential candidate Abraham Lincoln. Elected as the first Republican Vice President, Hamlin held that office from 1861 to 1865.
