Description:

1842 "Boston Times" Report on Capt. Ross's Antarctic Exploration

4pp, measuring 16.5" x 21.5", Boston, dated July 2, 1842. An issue of the "Boston Times", Vol. XII, No. 2029, with general news reports, editorials, snippets of works of literature, and various advertisements for medicine, clothing, plays and entertainment, railroad travel, etc. This issue contains an interesting article on Captain James Clark Ross, known for his Antarctic expedition from 1839 to 1843. The article relates the travels of the USS "Oregon", which led the U.S. Exploring Expedition and gained news of Captain Ross and his crew in the Falkland Island. Reading in part:

"…Two days before the Oregon left Rio, H.B.M. surveying ketch Arrow, Lieut. Robinson, reached that port from the Falkland Islands, bringing intelligence of the arrival at that group of the Erebus and Terror, composing Captain Ross's Southern Exploring Expedition. It appears that Captain Ross left the Bay of Islands, (New Zealand) on the 23d of November, and entered the ice Dec 18th, 1831; on the 20th of January following, he experienced a heavy gale, in which the rudders of both vessels were damaged by the ice, and having penetrated six miles further than during his cruise in the preceding year, he determined to return. While on his way North, on the 18th March, 1842, in lat. 66 44, a collision took place between the two vessels, by which both were very much damaged, the Erebus, however, receiving most injury…It was reported that one of the British national ships would proceed to the assistance of Captain Ross…" The newspaper has flattened folds, light toning, and foxing throughout. Some light edge chipping. Very good overall.

Sir James Clark Ross (1800-1862) was a British Royal Navy officer most famous for his explorations of the Arctic and Antarctic. He joined two of the Arctic expeditions led by his uncle, Sir John Ross, and four led by Sir William Parry, before venturing on his own into Antarctica. He commanded the HMS "Erebus", joined by the HMS "Terror", and charted much of the Antarctic coastline. Two of his discoveries were named in his honor, the Ross Sea and James Ross Island. Upon his return, Ross was knighted in 1844 and elected to the Royal Society in 1848.
