Description:

1796 Pocket Map of London & Its Environs After Robert Sayer, Laurie & Whittle Edition

A handsome hand-colored copper plate engraving after English printmaker Robert Sayer (1725-1794), "A New and Accurate Plan of London, Westminster & Borough of Southwark; wherein is distinctly inserted all the Additional Streets, Squares &c in and round the Metropolis and Extended to Chelsea, Walworth &c &c" ("Publish'd 12th May 1796 by Laurie & Whittle, No. 53 Fleet Street, London.") The segmented case map is dissected and mounted on linen in sixteen sections, making it foldable and pocket size. Expected wear including scattered minor staining, and isolated darkening and stray threads found along the edges, else good. The map is currently encapsulated in removable Mylar plastic to a completed size of 23.5" x 17.5." Accompanied by an original catalog description and an invoice dated January 2020 from The Old Print Shop (New York, New York).

Robert Sayer was a prominent London printmaker specializing in maps, maritime charts, prints, and juvenile books. The first edition of this map was published by Sayer in 1792, just two years before his death. Sayer's work associates Robert Laurie (ca. 1755-1836) and James Whittle (1757-1818) inherited Sayer's inventory. Laurie and Whittle published updated metropolitan maps based on the Sayer original in 1796 and 1798.

This highly detailed map shows the historic city of London and its environs, westward out to Hyde Park, St. James's Park, and Chelsea; eastward to Bethnal Green and Rotherhithe or Redriff; northward to Pentonville and Finsbury Fields; and southward to Vauxhall Park, Newing, Butts, and Walworth. The Thames River, completely delineated with its various bridge crossings, snakes underneath the city of London demarcated in red. Major roadways are tinted brown, parks green, and bodies of water light blue. An impressively complete reference key at bottom identifies over 50 landmarks including "A: Admiralty Office, White Hall"; "M: Fleet Prison, Fleet Market"; "f: Sessions House, Old Bailey; and "l: Theatre Royal, Covent Garden."
