1793 Haitian Slave Uprising Broadside

Document, 1 page, dated July 25, 1793, measuring 23.5" x 17.5".

An impressive Proclamation, in French, with a large illustration at top of a cannon, mortar, and flags. Extremely significant Haitian uprising proclamation broadside describing the outrages committed by General Galbaud against the Haitians and also contains numerous paragraphs discussing the freeing of slaves in different categories and towns. Minor edge tears scattered about and old repairs at bottom right, affecting the signatures and seal.

On August 24, 1791, the Haitian slaves rose up in rebellion, taking advantage of the French Revolution. France sent two commissioners to the island, Sonthonax and Polverel, who sought to enfranchise the slaves. However, they had to contend with the cruel General Galbaud, whom they eventually defeated with the help of the blacks (Galbaud fled to the U. S., of all places). Slavery was abolished in Haiti on February 4, 1794. This impressive document is extremely rare and historically significant.
