Brown University

1792 Brown University Broadside Advertised as Rhode Island College

Single sheet on laid paper, 17" x 21". Professionally restored reinforcements to folds, with small amount of paper loss. Toning and faint staining. Excellent condition, which presents well.

A fantastic large broadside advertising Rhode Island College, the precursor to Brown University, and noting early school chancellor Jabez Bowen (1739-1815) along the top. Bowen held numerous esteemed positions including: Freemason Grandmaster of Providence, representative in the General Assembly, and delegate to the Annapolis Convention in 1786 and the Constitutional Convention in 1790. Bowen married Sarah Brown of the prominent Brown family on December 19, 1762, thus becoming deeply involved in the family shipping business and the slave, molasses, rum, and China trades.

The early Brown broadside is written entirely in Latin and lists the academic degrees or “theses” obtainable from the college: Technologic, Grammatic, Rhetoric, Logic, Metaphysic, Ethic, Theologic, Politic, Mathematic, Historic, and Physic.

An excellent early piece of Brown University history!
