Description:

1789 Doc Re: Land Transactions in Veracruz in Colonial Mexico

A 4pp manuscript document in Spanish signed at its conclusion by four prominent nobles and officials of Jalacingo, a town located in the modern state of Veracruz in central coastal Mexico. Dated May 2, 1789. Inscribed in a neat secretarial hand on bifold, watermarked, laid paper reinforced with binding thread. The first and last pages bear the royal stamp of Spanish monarch Charles III, who reigned from 1759-1788, as well as a printed heading with the dates 1788 and 1789. Expected paper flaws consistent with age including flattened folds and edge darkening, else near fine and extremely legible. 8.25" x 12." Acquired from the Hudson Rogue Co. (Nelsonville, New York).

The document mentions the names of two local officials, Don Thomas Ferre, Lieutenant General of the jurisdiction, and Don Pedro Gorrindo Palomino, the mayor of the province of Xalapa, located about 75 km to the southeast from Jalacingo. Untranslated, the document appears to relate to a real estate transaction involving "D[onn]a Maria S[an]tos de Guebana," her brother Don Thomas de Guebana, and her sons Don José Ortis de Menary, and Don Ignacio Ruis. The sum of 41 pesos is mentioned. One of the most interesting parts of the document is found near its conclusion, when the names of three individuals are listed. "D[o]n Franc[es]co Peres Fraranca, D[o]n Jose Lopes Guixano and D[o]n Miguel Baxnientos" are described as "all Spanish neighbors from the beginning of the town."

The area around Jalacingo was inhabited by Totonac indigenous peoples prior to the arrival of Spanish conquistadors like Gonzalo de Sandoval, who destroyed much of Jalacingo around 1520. About 25 years later, in 1545, the Franciscan bishop Francisco del Toral established a mission church in Jalacingo called San Francisco. The Spanish Empire that controlled colonial Mexico, or New Spain, would not entirely relinquish its grip on the region for another 20 years.
