1789 Boston Newspaper: Washington Tours Eastern States & Praises Harvard's "knowledge, integrity and patriotism"
Newspaper

An issue of the "The Independent Chronicle and The Universal Advertiser", Volume XXI, No. 1096. Published by Adams and Nourse with reports on George Washington's tour through the East. 4pp of a bifolium, measuring 12" x 19.5", Boston, dated October 29, 1789. It appears the paper may have been taken from a larger bound volume. The subscribers name has been written at the top of the first page. Creasing and chipping at the edges and corners. There is a large tear on the first page which has been repaired at the edge with a piece of archival tape. The top left corner of page 4 is missing. Toning and scattered soiling throughout.

Highlights include:
p. 2: "TOUR OF THE PRESIDENT through the EASTERN STATES…In every part of the country through which our beloved President has passed, the roads have been lined with citizens, to hair him welcome - and the military has escorted him from place to place. Particularly to relate these grateful testimonials is impossible from their number. In Connecticut, we learn, besides the spontaneous gratulations of the People and honours of the Military, the Governour and Assistants of the State met him 20 miles from New-Haven, into which city he was conducted by the members of the General Assembly, which was then in session, who respectfully addressed him. In this State - the same feelings having excited similar demonstrations and esteem…"

p. 3: "To the PRESIDENT and FELLOWS of Harvard University in Cambridge…It gives me sincere satisfaction to learn the flourishing state of your literary Republick - assured of its efficiency in the past events of our political system, and of its further influence on those means which make the best support of good government, I rejoice that the direction of its measures is lodged with men, whose approved knowledge, integrity and patriotism, give an unquestionable assurance of their success. That the Muses may long enjoy a tranquil residence within the walls of your University, and that you, Gentlemen, may be happy in contemplating the progress of improvement through the various branches of your important departments, are among the most pleasing of my wishes and expectations. G. WASHINGTON."
