The Shippens were a wealthy and powerful Pennsylvania family.  Edward Shippen III (1703-1781) was an American merchant and mayor of Philadelphia. He was a trustee of the College of New Jersey (now Princeton) from 1748 to 1767. His son, Joseph Shippen Jr. (1732-1810), was a member of the Class of 1753; a soldier, merchant, and public figure, and to whom the here offered letter was written.

Edward Shippen married for a second time in August of 1747 to a woman named Mary Gray, the daughter of William and Mary Gray; he was her second husband. Mary Shippen is the author of this letter; she is Joseph Shippen’s stepmother.
