18th Century England

1750s Upper-Class Gentlemen and Sheriffs Food Purchases, Incl. Fowl, Venison & Lobster

An interesting group of accounting sheets for foods purchased in Britian for sheriffs and gentlemen. Four sheets, measuring between 3.5" x 7" and 8" x 13", dating ca. 1754. The documents show the purchases of food for two sheriffs and a dinner for 40 gentlemen, and include a wide spread of courses, including fowl, ham, fish, venison, lobster, cider, beer, wine, sweet bread, jelly, blemange, coffee, and more. The sheets have flattened folds, with light soiling and toning. Overall very good.

These documents clearly pertain to the upper class of English society, as meals made up of corn, pork, and beef were more likely to be found in the middle and lower class households. In wealthy households, much more variety was seen.
Those who could afford it were able to eat a greater variation of meats, including beef, veal, mutton, rabbit, and pigeon, as well as fish, vegetables, and fruit. They also drank alcohol such as wine, ale, beer, and mead, which were safer to drink than water. Those in the upper class were also able to import new foods from Asia and America. Unlike today, lobsters were viewed in 17th and 18th century Europe as "food for the poor" in , but later became a fashionable commodity during the mid-19th century.
