Description:

Massachusetts Bay Colony

Partially printed broadside, 7.5" x 12", headed by the British Coat of Arms, flanked by "G.II" to the left and "R" to the right, with a small diamond shaped paper and wax seal at upper left. The document is addressed "To the Select-Men or Assessors of the Town or District of Swansey and Shawanett requiring them "to asses the Sum of four hundred & nineteen pounds five Shillings set on your Town …" Instructions are given on how to assess the taxes, including "… estimate Negro, Indian and Molatto Servants proportionably as other Personal Estate, according to your sound Judgement and Discretion …" Overall toning and scattered foxing; professional repair to several closed tears at top and bottom of margins; also, a hard to see tear in the coat of arms and one tear in the text, which affects a few words. A penned notation on the verso says "This Role of paper is Deeds of Hezekiah Luther [ 1640-1723, died at Swansey], and other papers," and at the other end "The contry Rate is 9 Shilling on the pole."

A very scarce example from this early period.
