1640 Nova Virginiae Tabula by Blaeu- Early Map After John Smith's Virginia
Map

A detailed engraved map of Virginia and the Chesapeake Bay area produced by Dutch cartographer Willem Blaeu (1571-1638), after Captain John Smith. 1p, measuring 22.5" x 18", Amsterdam, n.d. [ca. 1640]. Features vibrant, hand colored detailing throughout with printed French text on verso, published in Le Theatre du Monde between 1638-1658. Exhibits negligible flattened fold at center, with scattered staining and closed tears near outside margin. Evident clipping to lower corners. Small section of repair present at far left of verso. Otherwise, very good.

This example is the second state of the original map, first engraved by Jodocus Hondius in 1618 and purchased by the Blaeu family in the 1630s. Due to the success and vast reach of Blaeu's Atlases, this map became a great influence to cartographers for several decades and is regarded as the most accurate map of the region for its time. On early examples of the map, such as this one, the ghost engraving of Jodocus Hondius can be seen underneath Blaeu's facsimile signature.

Several English and Native American place names are noted throughout, including Jamestown and numerous Native American villages. In the upper left corner is an engraving of the great Indian chief, Powhatan, seated on his throne and surrounded by his subjects. A Susquehanna chief is depicted on the right under the British coat-of-arms and a key cartouche.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
