The "National Intelligencer" was the first newspaper published in the District of Columbia. It operated between 1800-1870.

This group of newspapers primarily covers news related to the U.S. Congress and the U.S. Supreme Court, and government coverage also necessarily touched on economic policy, Indian relations, and individual state news. The archive also mentions the Seminole War; the 1819 Cherokee Treaty; soldiers' patents in the Missouri Territory; international affairs in the Russian Empire, Spain, India, and Morocco; scientific discoveries in exploration and meteorology; naval news and military promotions; technology (canals, locks, steamboats); crime (counterfeiting, murder, fugitive slaves). The issues are also packed with fascinating local or regional notices for: job listings; lottery announcements and rewards; shipping news; lost and found and unclaimed post office mail; and advertisements for theatrical performances, the circus, and a hot air balloon. Famous individuals referred to therein include James Monroe, John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson, Henry Clay, and Napoleon Bonaparte, to name just a few!
