Description:

15th C. Dutch Illuminated Manuscript Page From Book of Hours Mentioning "Holy Spirit," Ready for Display!

A 15th-century Dutch illuminated manuscript page excised from a Book of Hours, ca. 1460, displayed in a mat and ready for display. N.d., but ca. 1460. Inscribed in a clerical script in Dutch on parchment, with seventeen neat lines of black text found on either side of the page, with several capital letters and words highlighted in red and blue. The double-sided page is hinged along the left edge to the bottom mat. A German catalog label is found verso describing the document as a "Niederlandisches studenbuch," or "Dutch study book," or Book of Hours. Expected wear commensurate with age and wear including toning, edge darkening, and a slightly chipped lower right corner only visible when examined out of the mat. Scattered pencil inscriptions on the mat edges recto and verso. The actual size of the page is 3.75" x 5.5." The mat measures measuring 8.125" x 10.625" overall.

The religious content of this illuminated manuscript is confirmed by the presence on page 1, line 9, of a reference to "heiligen geest," which translates to the "Holy Spirit." Books of Hours were extremely popular in the Middle Ages and Early Modern Period. They could be in Latin--the official language of the church--or in vernacular languages, such as Dutch, and often contained excerpts of religious texts, psalms, or prayers. Books of Hours were used by Christian laypeople in their daily religious practices.
