Description:

A manuscript document accomplished during the early reign of Elizabeth I

Manuscript Document, 11" x 5", on vellum, [no place], November 12,1560 accomplished in Latin on the recto and English on the verso. Contemporary trimming to bottom margin, usual folds, light soiling.

The document concerns a bond granted by Humphrey Davenport to John& Elizabeth Barbor "for performance of Covenant in an Indenture made the same day..." Interestingly enough, Humphrey Davenport is the subject of a significant scholarly work, by Deborah Youngs, Humphrey Newton (1655-1536): an Early Tudor Gentleman. (2008).

This document was discovered in a collection of material related to the Standish family of Duxbury, Lancashire, believed to be relatives of Myles Standish, who helped found the colony at Plymouth in 1620.
