Mark T. Smith 2008 Beijing Olympics Original Poster Design

Mark T. Smith (born 1968), "Dragon," acrylic on canvas with mixed media. From Smith's Olympic Poster Art Series for the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing, China. 3x signed as "Mark T. Smith" and bearing four artist's monograms. Dated February 20, 2008. The canvas-wrapped stretchers are unframed, overall measuring 36" x 48" x 1.5". In near fine condition.

The painting is characteristic of Smith's style. Its vibrant colors were applied in both matte and reflective metallic paint. Smith's collage features many of his trademark geometric and graffiti like shapes. A stylized dragon in white, turquoise, and dark blue dominates the center, while stars, wheels, flames, vines, dots, zig zags, and spirals fill in the perimeter. Three faux-stenciled "08" are stacked at lower left. Signed "Mark T. Smith / 2008" and monogrammed "M" at lower left.

Also signed, monogrammed, dated, and inscribed in black felt tip marker, black paint, and pencil recto. 2x signed verso, once along the upper left stretcher, and once in pencil at upper right; 3x monogrammed "M"; dated February 20, 2008; and inscribed "Olympic Artwork Series Poster Art."

In 2008, the U.S. Olympic Committee selected Smith to serve as their official illustrator. In this capacity, Smith was tasked with designing the official United States Olympic Team poster as well as other promotional materials.

Mark T. Smith studied at Brooklyn's Pratt Institute before returning there to teach. Smith's punchy and graphic works have appeared in Pepsi, Absolut Vodka, Budweiser, AT&T, Walt Disney, VH-1, MTV, and Chrysler ad campaigns.

In his "Artist Statement," Smith writes in part: "artwork has a primary function of ennobling the public, which is a neo-classic counter-revolution to the emotionally vapid, irony for its own sake, and endlessly self-referencing post-modern artwork. In order to recreate an awareness and appreciation of the Arts, it must once more be connected to and integrated into our daily lives in a meaningful way, one that includes the viewer into the visions and experiences of the artwork, and the artist."
