Cobbler’s Account Book Reveals Life in Antebellum New Hampshire

This intriguing account book details the personal and business expenses of farmer/cobbler Andrews Emery of New Hampshire. The book details a variety of shoemaking services that Emery performed for his extended family and community, including crafting of new shoes and boots, repairs, and sole and heel replacements. He also performed a variety of agricultural services, including shearing sheep, plowing with oxen, and other activities.

Some of his customers paid him in cash, but many exchanged goods and services that reflected the webs of credit and barter in the antebellum economy.

Among his prominent customers was Captain Thomas Adams (1785-1841), town clerk from 1825 to 1832; Lieutenant Thomas Adams (1751-1820), whose wife was Emery’s great aunt and had adopted Daniel Emery (1782-1828), father of Andrews Emery; his mother Polly Emery; his father’s estate; Captain Parker Maynard (1769-1836); and Lieutenant Roger Brigham (1762-1837), a Revolutionary War veteran.
