Richard M. Nixon Signs a Rare and Superb Check to Charity!

Customized bank check signed by future 37th U.S. President Richard M. Nixon as "Richard Nixon" on payee line appearing below his typed signature "Richard M. Nixon." Nixon's address at 20 Broad Street in lower Manhattan is also printed vertically along left side. Check No. 161 was issued from New York City's Irving Trust Company on October 31, 1963, made payable in the amount of $100 to the Arthritis Foundation. The memo section reads "contribution." Typical bank stamps appear on the check's blue patterned ground and verso. Folded at center, else near fine. 8.25" x 3".

Former Vice President Nixon returned to private life after his failed California gubernatorial bid in 1962. The following year, he and his family traveled extensively through Europe, visiting dignitaries in Paris, Rome, Berlin, Frankfort, London, and other cities. Nixon also joined the prestigious law firm of Mudge, Rose, Guthrie, Alexander, and Ferdon, established in New York City in 1869. As a senior partner, Nixon recruited clients and served as the public face of the law firm.

The Richard M. Nixon Presidential Library, White House Special Files Collection, contains financial records of Nixon's charitable donations in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1963, Nixon donated over $9,000 to over 50 beneficiaries ranging from churches, universities, and hospitals to scholarship funds, veterans' groups, and children's organizations. These records indicate that Nixon donated $100 (as we already know from this check) to the Arthritis Foundation for three consecutive years, between 1963-1965. $100 was lower than Nixon's average charitable contribution of $180 in 1963. Nixon also donated money to multiple sclerosis, tuberculosis, and cardiac research in 1963.

The Arthritis Foundation, a non-profit organization headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, has raised $470 million in arthritis research since its inception in 1948. The foundation finances medical research and lobbies for healthcare legislation.
