Silver Desk Set gifted by Jordan's King Abdullah II to a powerful U.S. Congressman

Silver desk set comprising:

(1) 9.5" x 7" black tray with 1" silver border at perimeter with Arabic inscription; overall size, 11.25" x 9".

(2) 7" x 0.75" silver letter opener with rounded edges.

(3) Notepad with approximately 250 loose 5.5" x 5.5" blank sheets of paper, bound in a silver bordered holder, 5.75" x 5.75" x 1.75", with Arabic lettering on 5.75" x 1.5" overlap. Mirror base. Three coated pages preceding the blank sheets are imprinted in Arabic and English: "Celebrating the season of goodwill, / this box encapsulates the power of / the written word as immortalized / by Haidar Mahmoud and / Mustafa Wahbi El Tal. / Like these esteemed Jordanian poets, / we hope this desk set will inspire / creativity and love to one and all / at this happy time." Verso in Arabic, a verse from Haidar Mahmoud in Arabic and English. Two verses from Mustapha Wahbi El Tal in Arabic and English.

Presented by His Majesty, King Abdullah II and the Royal Family of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to Florida Republican Rep. Bill Young. The official U.S. Government justification for accepting gifts from foreign governments is “Non-acceptance would cause the donor or the U.S. Government embarrassment.” Minor flaws.

Congressman Young served as Chairman of the powerful House Appropriations Committee from 1999-2004 and as Chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense from 1995-1998, 2005-2006, and from 2011 until his death in 2013, serving as the Ranking Republican from 2007-2010. The House Appropriations Committee writes the bill which includes the amount of foreign aid in the form of economic and military assistance.
