Complaining of abdominal pain, Wayne underwent surgery on Wednesday; new cancer cells were found in tissue removed. The emergency thermal blankets were no doubt ordered for John Wayne’s use when he returned home.

On Saturday, May 5th, President Jimmy Carter visited John Wayne in his ninth floor hospital room; he had been on a two-day trip to Los Angeles and left for the airport after a private 15 minute visit with the ailing actor.
