Nathaniel Massie (1763-1813) Land speculator and surveyor who helped organize the Virginia Military District on the Ohio River helping establish some of the first major towns in the state of Ohio including Chillicothe.

The Virginia Military District was a large tract of land north of the Ohio River intended for land grants for Virginia veterans of the Revolutionary War. Although these lands were intended for soldiers, very few had the funds following the war to make a westward journey. Instead they often sold off their land claims to their officers for ready money to their officers who began to engage in western land speculation. This was one of five surveys done in this month for Gates, who purchased over 7000 acres of land in this region. The frenzy for western lands would continue well into the 1790s before the bubble would finally burst, bankrupting numerous investors including the prolific Robert Morris who ended the decade in debtor's prison.
