Henry Dearborn Signed Republican Institution Stock Certificate


Stock certificate signed by Henry Dearborn (1751-1829) as "H. Dearborn" at lower right. Dearborn was President of a Republican Institution of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, a Whig "think tank" founded in 1819. Signed in Boston on December 1, 1821. Also signed by Thaddeus Page, Recording Secretary, at bottom. Transfer details from August 10, 1826 can be found verso. A minor closed tear located at lower right. Light overall toning and scattered discoloration, else very good to near fine. Dearborn's signature is dark and clear. 9.875" x 8.125". Also including a print of Dearborn with a facsimile signature, 4.5" x 7".


The handsome certificate, number 130, was printed by Merchant's Hall, Boston printers True & Green, and features an American eagle at center. A pale blue silk ribbon threaded through the left edge of the paper terminates in a gorgeous embossed paper and wax seal at upper left.


In part:


"Be it known, that Mr. Robert J. Browne, of Boston in the County of Suffolk and Commonwealth, of Massachusetts is the sole proprietor of One Share, viz: No. One hundred thirty in A Republican Institution in the Town of Boston, subject to the By-Laws, and such Rules and Regulations as may be adopted by the members at any meeting legally holden for that purpose, which Share is transferable by endorsement to be made agreeably to the 16th Article of the By-Laws…"


Henry Dearborn served with distinction in the Revolutionary War; he was a prisoner-of-war in Canada, an aide to General Washington, and a participant at Yorktown. Dearborn served as U.S. Secretary of War between 1801-1809, where he oversaw Indian policy, national borders, and the formation of the new military academy. Dearborn served served honorably in the War of 1812. A year after he signed this certificate, Dearborn was dispatched abroad as U.S. Minister to Portugal (1822-1824).
