Photograph Signed “Gerti!”. Sepia, 10” x12”. Photographer’s stamping on verso “Photographed by the / De Barron Studios / 44 West 46th St., N.Y.C.” Handwritten by a collector on verso “Gertrude Lawrence / about 1925.” Creased at upper corners. Fine condition.

Gertrude Lawrence (1898-1952) debuted on Broadway in 1924 in “Andre Charlot’s Review of 1924.” She was the star of her next show, “Charlot Revue” (1925-1926), followed by numerous hit comedies and musicals in the 30s and 40s. On March 30, 1952, Gertrude Lawrence was awarded the 1952 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her role as Anna in “The King and I” which had opened on March 29 1951, and in which she still starred, when she died suddenly of infectious hepatitis on September 6, 1952. She had entered the hospital after an August 16th matinee.
