Single page typed letter signed, 8" x 10.5," on Cornell University Medical College, New York City letterhead. Dated "December 19, 1949," and boldly signed by George Papanicolaou as "George."  Near fine with expected folds.

Dr. George Papanicolaou, writes to Leon Whitney, ( a noted veterinarian, dog breeder, the author of several dog care books, and an early proponent of eugenics). The two have maintained a close friendship going back many years with this letter making numerous references to the social time together. George additionally thanks Leon for his book and includes a jocular comment about Dogs which resonates with Whitney who breeds dogs, ardently studied dog behavior, canine eugenics, and authored numerous dog books . "Your book is here and I certainly took a great deal of pride in reading your inscription, but we are still without a dog. Maybe by the time we receive your next book we'll decide to get one unless you send us one with your next book. If you do so, it has to be one of the Mexican Chihuahuas which Mrs. Pap could put in her handbag and carry back and forth to the school, for we are still going through the same daily routine … " All-in Whitney ending up writing over 5 books on dogs including Natural Method of Dog Training, Know How To Choose Your Dog, Bloodhounds and How To Train Them, Dog Psychology, The Basis of Dog Training, How to Breed Dogs.

By the date of this letter, Papanicolaou had already published Diagnosis of Uterine Cancer by the Vaginal Smear (1943),  now famously known as the Pap smear or test, which quickly became the gold standard in screening for cervical cancer. As it cost little, was easy to perform and could be interpreted accurately, the Pap smear found widespread use and resulted in a significant decline in the incidence of cervical cancer. Very rare in any for this being sourced from the only letters we have seen.

A wonderful letter between two ground breaking scientists!
