Signed iconic photograph of the Black Power salute at the 1968 Summer Olympics.
Description
Poster Signed “Tommie Smith / 1968” and “Dr / John / Carlos / 68 & 2011,” each in gold felt tip, 19” x 26”. Minor creases and sharp diagonal crease in upper right blank area. Perfectr “:10” signature strength. Fine condition.

The poster, signed by Smith, was sold by Steiner Sports whose hologram label is affixed at the lower right. Carlos autographed the poster for a collector in 2011.

On October 16, 1968, at the Games of the XIX Olympiad, the 1968 Summer Olympics held in Mexico City, United States athlete Tommie Smith won the 200 meters race in a world-record time of 19.83 seconds (gold). Australia’s Peter Norman was second with a time of 20.06 seconds (silver), and John Carlos of the USA finished third with a time of 20.10 seconds (bronze). After the race was completed, the three went to collect their medals at the podium. As they stood on the victory platform and the national anthem of the gold medal winner began, Smith and Carlos bowed their heads, and, each wearing a black glove, raised a clenched fist in a black power salute. Tommie Smith stated in his autobiography, “Silent Gesture,” that the gesture was not a “black power” salute, but in fact a “human rights salute.” Peter Norman wore an Olympic Project for Human Rights badge in support of the pair. It remains one of the most vivid of all Olympic images.
