31st Fighter Group 12th Army Air Force jacket.
Army Air Force Jacket. “Lt. G.A. Douglass” imprinted on label inside jacket. “U.S.” and U.S. AAF Wing and Prop pin on each lapel; four ribbons above left pocket: American Campaign Medal Ribbon, World War II Victory Medal Ribbon, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal Ribbon (three metal stars affixed), and American Defense Medal Ribbon; triangular 12th AAF insignia patch on right shoulder; circular AAF insignia patch, (no number) on left shoulder. Nine jacket buttons, each with the Seal of the United States, are present. Matching Seahorse pins on epaulets. Excellent condition.

Lt. George A. Douglass, Jr., 0-325324, was promoted to Captain and his name appears on the August 10, 1943, roster of the 31st Fighter Group, 307th Fighter Squadron.

Concern over the USAAF's inability to escort B-29s all the way to mainland Japan resulted in the highly classified "Seahorse Project," an effort to "navalize" the P-51D aircraft. The project was cancelled after U.S. Marines secured the Japanese Island of iwo Jima and its airfields, making it possible for standard P-51D aircraft to accompany B-29s all the way to the Japanese home islands and back.

In April 1945, the 31st Fighter Group began to concentrate their efforts against tactical targets in Northern Italy. Four or five missions a day were flown by each squadron escorting medium bombers of the 12th Air Force and carrying out armed reconnaissance patrols in support of Allied Armies. The fighting in Italy ended on May 2, 1945, and the War in Europe officially ended May 8th. The 31st Fighter Group ended the war as the top scoring allied fighter group in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations and the 5th highest overall for the USAAF with 570½ confirmed aerial victories.
