George Zaharias, The Crying Greek from Cripple Creek, was a professional wrestler who met golfer Babe Didrikson when she qualified at the 1938 Los Angeles Open, a men’s PGA tournament. They married later that year and George left wrestling to manage Babe’s career. In 1947, Fred Corcoran took over as her agent. In an interview he once said, “I always wanted to be a champion. I never was, but I wrestled Jim Londos two hours to a draw, once, in Cleveland in 1935, and they called me Champ for a while”. He may never have been a champion, but he married one and managed her career for the next ten years. Babe Didrikson was a phenomenal athlete and when she took on golf at the age of 22, after having played baseball, basketball, earned three Olympic medals in track and field (women were limited to only three events in the 1932 Olympics), she won the first tournament she entered and she didn’t stop there. In her relatively short golf career (she died at the age of 45 from cancer), she won a total of 82 tournaments and was named Female Athlete of the Century by the Associated Press and Sports Illustrated.
